Except, sometimes it turns into a feud of the Hatfield-McCoy variety — without the shots fired, of course. No bad blood emanated Friday afternoon in a rivalry game for the ages at Woodside Priory, but it sure felt as if blood, sweat and tears were shed with Pinewood in town and a championship on the line.
And it takes everybody. After more than three hours and 20 touchdowns — 10 apiece — the showdown for first place in the Mission Trail 8-man League during the season finale required a goal-line stop on a two-point try in overtime to determine the winner — Pinewood 68, Priory PrioryMission Trail seemed poised to break things wide open after senior Keyshawn Ashford, a 5-foot, pound running back recruited by NCAA Division I programs, ripped off a yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage out of halftime.
We fought as a family. Pinewoodfound itself trailing when the strain of deploying two-way players in sweltering temperatures during a heated affair began to take its toll. Ashford battled cramps for most of the second half after crossing the goal line. Ditto moments for teammate Jaeden Barker, who found the end zone with and yard runs in the first quarter.
We just had to make too many adjustments and I felt like we were scrambling the whole game. Pinewood felt its own share of pains, with Murphy suffering a left knee injury in the midst of a third-quarter rally. My trainer wrapped it up real nice and it felt a lot better. And the adrenaline obviously just pulled me through it. Two plays before the injury scare on the sideline, Murphy came down with an interception.
But one of three players that fought for up-for-grabs ball required medical attention, as Pinewood quarterback Jaedan Bailey was hampered by leg cramps the rest of the way. His counterpart, Priory quarterback Adrian LaValle, entered the game already injured, nursing a sore right-throwing shoulder. Thepound senior battled through the pain to finish his high-school career by going 10 of 17 for yards with four touchdowns — three in the second quarter, plus a yard hook up with fellow senior Mikhail Saliba to force overtime with 55 seconds left in regulation.
